Zoom bombing is a type of cyber-harassment that occurs when an unauthorized person joins a Zoom meeting to disrupt it. These disruptors may be individuals or automated bots, and their tactics can include:

  • Using offensive or inappropriate language
  • Sharing unwanted or harmful images, such as pornography or hate-filled content
  • Sharing their screens to display disruptive imagery

While these incidents can be distressing, maintaining calmness is essential, as disruptors often seek to provoke reactions from participants. Below, we’ve outlined steps to help minimize disruptions and ensure your meeting continues smoothly.

Steps to Address Zoom Bombing:

  1. Suspend Participant Activities:
    • In the Zoom toolbar, click “Host Tools” and select “Suspend Participant Activities.”
    • This action will immediately mute all participants, disable video, and turn off chat for everyone, including yourself.
  2. Inform Participants:
    • After unmuting yourself, calmly explain that participant activities have been temporarily suspended to address disruptions. Let attendees know that chat, cameras, and microphones have been disabled.
  3. Decide Whether to Continue or Conclude the Meeting:
    • If you feel comfortable, you can continue by presenting a SMART Recovery tool or video.
    • Alternatively, inform participants and end the meeting if you feel that is the best course of action.

Important Reminder About the “Report to Zoom” Option:

Please use caution when considering the “Report to Zoom” feature. Disruptors may impersonate legitimate participants by mimicking their names or profile pictures. Reporting the wrong person could inadvertently block an innocent participant from Zoom. If you are unsure about a disruptor’s identity, we recommend using the “Suspend Participant Activities” feature and addressing the situation internally.
