Motivational Interviewing Coaching Circle 

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a key part of your facilitator skills. This session is all about sharpening your MI skills, focusing on OARS (Open-Ended Questions, Affirmations, Reflective Listening, Summaries) and DEARS (Develop Discrepancy, Express Empathy, Amplify Ambivalence, Roll with Resistance, Support Self-Efficacy). You’ll role-play scenarios just like those you might face in a SMART meeting. Whether you choose to participate and or prefer to listen and observe, you’re sure to leave feeling more confident and ready to use MI in your meetings!

Facilitator Role Play 

Facilitator Role Play is the session designed to prepare your to tackle real-world challenges in a supportive environment. Whether it’s managing a disruptive participant, engaging a quiet group, or addressing other tricky situations, this session will equip you with practical ideas to handle them confidently in your meetings. Bring a challenge you’ve faced recently, and SMART staff and volunteers will help you work through it, or we’ll provide scenarios to explore together. With role-playing and debriefs, you’ll leave feeling prepared to handle whatever comes your way!

Tool Time Tuesdays! 

This is your chance to practice SMART’s 4-Point Program tools in real-time and learn how to facilitate using them in your SMART meeting—whether it’s in-person or online. Try them out, role-play scenarios, and learn from fellow facilitators. Hands-on, practical, and designed to boost your confidence.

Lunch & Learn Wednesdays

Join the National Office Staff members and Volunteer Leaders on Wednesdays at 12 PM Eastern as we discuss a variety of topics including Culture and Inclusion, Meeting Best Practices, and many more! Don’t worry there will be plenty of time to ask questions about these topics, volunteering and training.

  • 1st Wednesday – Inclusion and Belonging at SMART Recovery
  • 2nd Wednesday – Developing a Harm Reduction Mindset
  • 3rd Wednesday – Meeting Best Practices 
  • 4th Wednesday – Marketing and Promoting Your SMART meeting
  • 5th Wednesday – Volunteer team building

SMART Meeting Management (SMM):

If you’re looking to enhance your meeting management skills or handle challenges more adeptly, this discussion meeting is tailored for you. Discover how to strike a balance between setting boundaries (to “Do SMART Recovery”) and fostering an accepting space where participants can engage in meaningful discussions. You’ll gain insights into how others navigate this balance and what they’ve learned to be effective. The discussions might also cover the presentation and application of tools, or introduce new tools as they develop.

Family & Friends Focused SMART Meeting Management (SMM):

Realizing that Family & Friends meetings bring their own unique challenges, we have created this focused SMM meeting to help further your skills to more smoothly handle challenges you may encounter.

  • You are welcome to join any or all of these sessions.
  • You can drop in anytime or stay for the whole session. If you only have 20 minutes, join us anyway!
  • Partipiation is not required- you are welcome to attend and listen. We promise, you’ll learn something, even if you don’t actively participate.
